UNICEF Reports One in Five Lebanese Households Say Children Go to Bed Hungry as Four in Five Struggle to Afford Basic Necessities

Record added

UNICEF said on September 30, 2026, that children go to bed hungry in at least one in five households in Lebanon, while a similar proportion lacks access to sufficient amounts of safe drinking water, according to a new assessment titled An Enduring Nightmare. The report, based on a survey conducted in July, found that four in five households are struggling to afford basic necessities as conflict compounds years of economic crisis. Twenty-two percent of households surveyed reported that their children had gone to bed hungry in the previous two weeks, while thirty-one percent said children had gone without needed health care, mainly because families could not afford it. Fourteen percent of surveyed families reported at least one child working, more than twice the proportion recorded in January 2025.

The report arrives nearly six months after an April 17, 2026, ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel intended to halt hostilities linked to the U.S.-Iran war. UNICEF noted that airstrikes and demolitions of homes continue, and of the more than one million people displaced within weeks of the escalation, nearly 330,000 have yet to go home because of continued attacks and widespread destruction in southern Lebanon.

An estimated 770,000 children and young people are suffering psychological distress, while forty-six percent of families reported reduced education spending and seventeen percent said their children had stopped attending school, UNICEF said.
