Volantis Raises 88 Million Dollars in Series A to Build Photonic AI Inference System Addressing Memory Bottleneck

Record added

Volantis, a San Francisco semiconductor company, announced an 88 million dollar Series A on October 1, 2026, co-led by Lachy Groom and Abstract Ventures, to fund development and commercialization of its photonic A-1 inference system. The round drew participation from John Doerr, VXI Capital, Triatomic and Susa Ventures, with angel investors Dwarkesh Patel, Naveen Rao and Sholto Douglas also joining. Volantis said the financing brings its total funds raised to 97 million dollars to date, including backing from Sam Altman, Jeff Dean, Dylan Patel and John Doerr. The A-1 system uses photonic interconnects based on custom micro-VCSEL technology to create optical links between compute chips and memory, with the architecture designed to connect a GPU to as many as 220 memory chips versus around 8 chips in traditional setups. Volantis says the system is designed for models exceeding 20 trillion parameters and up to 10,000 tokens per second per user, with around 10 terabytes of memory capacity and 240 terabytes per second of bandwidth, though these are vendor targets, not verified production benchmarks. Volantis plans to deliver its first integrated inference engines to customers in 2027.

Organizations deploying large language models face constraints where on-chip SRAM provides high bandwidth but limited capacity, restricting model size and context windows, while HBM-based systems offer greater capacity but bandwidth limits how quickly they can serve large models. Volantis argues that memory access, rather than raw processing power, is now the main constraint on AI inference, though whether its photonic architecture will deliver the claimed performance in customer deployments by 2027 remains unverified.
