Trump Executive Order Rebrands AI as Super Intelligence Across Federal Government, Directs New Definition Within 60 Days
Record added
President Trump signed Executive Order 14434 on September 29, 2026, directing executive departments and agencies to use the term Super Intelligence in lieu of Artificial Intelligence across official communications, websites and policy documents. The order does not require agencies to revise previously issued regulations, contracts or historical documents. Assistant to the President for Science and Technology Michael J. Kratsios has 60 days to submit proposed statutory language to formally define Super Intelligence in federal law and evaluate conforming amendments to existing statutes. On the same day, tech leaders signed a parallel voluntary White House Accord on Super Intelligence calling on companies developing frontier models to implement internal controls, monitoring processes, independent external assessments and board-level oversight, though the accord does not create legally enforceable obligations. On October 4, Trump announced formation of a Super Intelligence Force, to be led by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton, tasked with coordinating federal efforts to ensure America leads in Super Intelligence.
Federal agencies must adopt the new terminology while international governance frameworks continue using artificial intelligence as the standard term. The terminology shift coincides with Connecticut's comprehensive AI law taking effect October 1, 2026, using the traditional AI terminology the federal government is now abandoning, and follows Trump having revoked Biden's Executive Order 14110 on AI safety within hours of assuming office in January 2025.
