Four-Storey Building Collapses in Delhi's Seemapuri, Several Feared Trapped Under Debris as Rescue Operations Continue

Record added

A four-storey building collapsed in northeast Delhi's Seemapuri area near Idgah Fish Market on the afternoon of October 7, 2026, with several people feared trapped under the debris. The Delhi Fire Service received the call around 3:30 pm and rushed teams to the spot, according to Free Press Journal and The Daily Jagran. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Rajendra Prasad Meena said some people had been rescued and sent to hospitals, while two to three were suspected to be trapped under the debris. The building measured 225 square feet. Residents joined rescue efforts, with a local resident saying four to five people had been rescued by residents and taken to hospitals before police arrived after half an hour. The front portion of the building collapsed, burying portions of two to three floors.

Locals claimed the building had developed cracks following tremors felt in Delhi-NCR due to an earthquake in Uttarakhand on Tuesday night, October 6. The incident occurred a month after a building collapse in Delhi's Satya Niketan area. In that case, a wall on the ground floor was allegedly removed to create additional space for a shop; structural changes along with additional load in the basement affected the building's stability, leading to collapse, according to Latestly.

Residents of the building and nearby structures are affected, with several hospitalized and two to three suspected trapped under debris as rescue operations continue. The proximity to Tuesday night's earthquake tremors raises questions about whether seismic activity triggered the collapse of an already compromised structure or whether the building's cracks indicated pre-existing structural defects.
