French Student Protests Enter Third Week With Over 6,000 Arrested, 500 Schools Closed as Government Faces Pre-Election Legitimacy Crisis
Record added
French student protests over education conditions entered their third week in early October 2026 with more than 6,100 arrests since late September and up to 500 schools closed on safety grounds, according to France's Interior and Education ministries cited by Time, Al Jazeera and the Washington Post. Education Minister Edouard Geffray announced on October 4 that lessons would be totally or partly suspended in 400 to 500 high schools because security conditions have not been fulfilled, adding that 24 schools had been burned or ransacked since the start of the protests. A 15-year-old lost a hand in a grenade explosion near a vocational school in Lens on October 5, Al Jazeera reported. The protests began in late September over complaints about class sizes, lack of teachers and dilapidated buildings. University students joined the blockades on October 1 at campuses including Paris Cité, Sorbonne, Strasbourg, Montpellier, Lyon and Rennes. By October 2, more than 250,000 protesters took to the streets nationwide, Time reported. The Interior Ministry said 1,949 people were arrested on October 1 alone, with 87 percent of those detained since the protests began being minors and more than 1,800 facing prosecution.
Students in affected areas face disrupted education through closed schools, with student organizations demanding concrete measures from the government beyond the national consultation portal launched October 6, which is open until October 23, the Washington Post reported. The crisis tests whether Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu's administration can restore order and credibility before voters go to the polls in a presidential election, though it remains uncertain whether the unrest will affect electoral outcomes.
