Pentagon Announces $350 Million Quantum Computing Initiative, Advancing Four Companies to DARPA Final Stage
Record added
The Pentagon announced approximately $350 million in quantum computing initiatives on October 8, 2026, comprising roughly $200 million in new DARPA funding and a conditional loan commitment of up to $150 million for PsiQuantum, according to announcements by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering and reporting by HPCwire, The Epoch Times, PostQuantum, and Interesting Engineering. The DARPA funding supports the October 7, 2026 selection of Atom Computing, Diraq, IBM, and IonQ for Stage C of the Quantum Benchmarking Initiative, joining Microsoft and PsiQuantum in the final verification phase. DARPA says the funding builds on more than $650 million already invested in prospective quantum-computing providers. The Office of Strategic Capital's proposed loan would support PsiQuantum's 140,000-square-foot manufacturing and prototyping hub in Milpitas, California. The Pentagon says it will host application workshops before January 2027 to identify mission-relevant uses for quantum computers across physics, chemistry, and materials science, with expected applications including next-generation weapons, platform development, and multi-domain operations.
The six Stage C participants work with DARPA to verify whether their proposed systems can be constructed as designed and operated as intended, with the objective of determining whether any approach can achieve utility-scale operation by 2033 at a value exceeding cost. Whether any participant will meet that target remains uncertain.
