Nvidia in Early Talks to Acquire or Invest Further in Reflection AI, Financial Times Reports

Record added

Nvidia is in early-stage talks to acquire open-weight AI startup Reflection AI or deepen its existing investment, the Financial Times reported on October 10, citing people with direct knowledge of the matter. The talks could take several forms, including a full acquisition, increased equity stake, enhanced chip and computing support, or an acqui-hire arrangement in which Nvidia would hire staff and license technology rather than pursue a full acquisition, potentially avoiding lengthy regulatory review. No agreement has been reached and the discussions could collapse. Nvidia has already invested $800 million in Reflection AI and led the startup's $2 billion funding round in October 2025 that valued the company at $8 billion. Reflection AI CEO Misha Laskin confirmed in an April 2026 CNBC interview that the startup closed a subsequent funding round at a $25 billion pre-money valuation. The startup unveiled its first open-weight model, Beam, on October 5, 2026, positioning it against lower-cost Chinese open models such as DeepSeek and Kimi for coding and agentic work. Beam's training ran on Nvidia GB300 systems that Reflection rents from SpaceX under a June 2026 agreement worth up to $6.3 billion, with $150 million monthly payments starting July 1, 2026, running through 2029.

The outcome affects Nvidia's strategic position in open-weight AI development and Reflection AI's access to capital, computing resources, and distribution. The parties must reconcile valuation expectations and deal structure within the reported weeks-long negotiation window, with no certainty that talks will produce an agreement.
