Truck crashes into Gwalior temple crowd killing 15 as driver allegedly uses Google Maps shortcut

Record added

Fifteen people died and more than 25 were injured when a paddy-laden truck broke through police barricades and crashed into devotees outside the Sheetla Mata temple in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, around 1:30 am on October 18, 2026, during Navratri prayers. The Punjab-registered truck descended a steep slope on Chinar Road, a restricted no-entry zone for heavy vehicles, before striking worshippers and crashing into the temple gate and outer wall. Gwalior authorities arrested the driver Mohit Singh and the truck owner, with investigators examining whether the driver used Google Maps to take a shortcut and whether brake failure contributed to the crash. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav removed the City Superintendent of Police and suspended eight officers, announcing ex gratia relief of 4 lakh rupees for victims' families.

The tragedy highlights recurring enforcement gaps in traffic management around religious sites during major festivals. Authorities are investigating how the overloaded truck bypassed multiple police checkpoints on a road where heavy vehicle movement was prohibited. Preliminary investigations suggested mechanical brake failure, though officials noted that if the driver had not swerved left before impact, the truck could have run over 600 to 700 devotees.
