Iran Displays Captured MQ-9 Reaper and Hermes 900 Wreckage, Claims Reverse-Engineering Underway

Iranian state media and IRGC officials say the Aerospace Force has recovered a largely intact Israeli Hermes 900 (serial 923) and multiple U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drones during recent operations, alongside wreckage identified as an F-15E and C-130 Hercules components. According to Tasnim and IRGC statements, the Hermes 900 was downed via electronic warfare, while the Reapers were intercepted by Iranian air defenses, including the newly fielded Arashe Kamangir system. Neither the U.S. Department of Defense nor Israeli authorities have independently verified the recovery circumstances, condition, or precise identification of the wreckage — these remain Iranian-sourced claims presented as propaganda and intelligence signaling. IRGC officials state engineers are examining the recovered systems' sensors, datalinks, optics, and flight architecture, with the stated goal of reverse-engineering components into indigenous drone programs. Iran's history of exploiting captured Western platforms is precedented: the 2011 recovery of a Lockheed Martin RQ-170 Sentinel is widely assessed to have informed the flying-wing design of the Shahed 171 Simorgh and Shahed 191 UCAVs. Analysts caution that Iran's primary constraint remains access to advanced microelectronics and precision machine tools, meaning any near-term output is more likely to blend reverse-engineered airframes and optics with commercial-off-the-shelf electronics than to produce true 1:1 clones.
