Iran Strikes Kuwait in Retaliation, Damage Claims Contested
Sources: CENTCOM statements, IRGC/Press TV, Kuwait Army General Staff, NPR, AP. Status: Developing — verified sequence of events (US strikes → Iranian retaliation → intercepts across Gulf states) vs. contested damage claims (Iran: high-damage hit; Kuwait: fully intercepted).
US strikes hit roughly 140 targets in southern Iran overnight after the IRGC fired on a commercial vessel and declared the Strait of Hormuz closed. Iran responded with drone and missile fire toward US-linked infrastructure in Kuwait (Camp Arifjan, Ali Al Salem Air Base); barrages were also reported intercepted over Jordan, Qatar, Bahrain, and the UAE. Damage claims are contested: Iranian state media asserts a successful, high-damage strike on the Kuwait targets, while Kuwait's General Staff says its air defenses intercepted the incoming threats and that explosions heard were the result of interception, not impact. Independent damage assessment is not yet available from either side. This is the third consecutive weekend the ceasefire framework signed in June 2026 (Islamabad Memorandum) has failed to hold.
