Romanian President Nicușor Dan nominated Liberal European lawmaker Siegfried Mureșan as prime minister on Thursday September 17, marking his third attempt to end a monthslong political crisis that has stretched more than four months since the government was dismissed in May following a no-confidence vote that toppled Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. Dan nominated the 44-year-old member of the European Parliament and the center-right National Liberal Party during consultations with political parties, telling reporters he chose to designate the person who has the most votes cast by the parties in consultations despite the absence of a clear parliamentary majority. Mureșan, who became an MEP in 2014 and is vice chair of the European People's Party group in the European Parliament, accepted the nomination in a Facebook post shortly after the announcement and now has 10 days to present a cabinet list to Parliament for a confidence vote. Dan made two prior nominations in June after the no-confidence vote: his adviser Eugen Tomac, who withdrew before a parliamentary vote could occur, and Liberal Adrian Vestea, who failed to secure the required votes. The protracted political crisis is pressuring Romania's investment-grade rating as the country struggles to form a stable government. Dan said Mureșan's experience in the European Parliament qualifies him for the premiership, though the nominee faces the challenge of assembling a coalition despite hundreds of hours of discussions with political parties that have failed to produce a clear majority. When the previous coalition came to power in June 2025, its priority was to reduce the deficit, but the current deadlock has left that agenda stalled.
