Sderot Industrial Fire
A large fire tore through the industrial zone of Sderot, the Israeli city bordering Gaza, on Monday — hitting facilities run by food manufacturers Strauss and Tapugan.
Fire and Rescue Services issued precautionary evacuation orders over concerns of an ammonia leak at one of the plants, with residents in Sderot's Music Neighborhood told to shelter indoors with windows shut while hazmat teams assessed the site. That concern was later ruled out.
Over two dozen firefighting units responded to contain the blaze and stop it spreading to nearby facilities storing industrial materials. One civilian and one firefighter sustained minor smoke inhalation injuries. Strauss confirmed its facility was evacuated with no staff harmed.
The cause remains under investigation.
