Seven people, including three children, were killed and 58 others injured when a drone crashed onto a crowded beach in Russia's southern Krasnodar region on Monday, August 3, according to local officials. The explosion occurred near the village of Arkhipo-Osipovka, about 22 kilometers from the Black Sea resort town of Gelendzhik, a popular tourist destination. Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratyev accused Ukraine of carrying out a deliberate strike on civilians and said 40 people were injured, with 17 hospitalized. Video verified by the BBC and shared on social media showed a drone approaching a cliffside before crashing into a fireball near people gathered on the beach and in the water. Russian officials reported that the drone was shot down by a mobile fire group, causing debris to fall onto the beach. Ukraine did not confirm or deny launching the drone, but Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation, said Russian air defenses shot the drone down over vacationers and blamed Russian authorities for failing to protect civilians. He also accused President Putin of downplaying Ukrainian attacks on Russia, creating an illusion of peace that has made the public complacent. Had they acknowledged the war on their own territory, people would have reacted more actively to the alert, which in some places in Russia is not even announced, Kovalenko said. The beach attack came as Russian officials reported a series of Ukrainian drone strikes in several regions over the weekend. At least nine people were reported killed in attacks between July 24 and August 3. Moscow accused Ukraine of targeting civilians, which would constitute a war crime, and unleashed a barrage of aerial strikes on its neighbor. Ukrainian officials noted that their own civilians faced deadly Russian bombardment throughout the summer, with Russian attacks killing at least 377 civilians and injuring 2,129 others in July 2026, making it the deadliest month of the invasion since A
