Ten Years, One Scorecard: The Gap Between Promise and Delivery

Ten years of announcements. Where's the accountability?

Every few months there's a new slogan, a new launch event, a new hashtag. Here's what actually happened to the big ones:

🏭 Make in India — promised to push manufacturing to 25% of GDP. It's still stuck near where it started.

🚻 Swachh Bharat — toilets got built. Whether they're actually used, and whether sewage treatment scaled with them, is a different story. Namami Gange hasn't fixed river pollution either.

👧 Beti Bachao Beti Padhao — audits found more money went to ads than to girls on the ground.

💵 Demonetisation — the stated goal was flushing out black money. RBI's own numbers showed ~99.3% of the cancelled notes came back into the system. So what was actually achieved, besides months of disruption for ordinary people?

🌫️ Clean air targets — Delhi still chokes every winter. NCAP hasn't touched the real sources.

🏦 ₹15 lakh in every account — quietly reclassified as "a figure of speech" once people started asking where it was.

🚄 Bullet train — was supposed to be running by 2023. Still under construction.

💼 2 crore jobs a year — youth unemployment says otherwise.

🌾 Doubling farm income by 2022 — didn't happen. The farm laws saga made the gap even more visible.

🗳️ "Corruption-free, transparent governance" — electoral bonds became the biggest transparency scandal of the decade, and it barely dented the narrative.

🚨 Women's safety — laws changed on paper; missing-women numbers and unspent Nirbhaya Fund allocations tell the ground reality.

📊 Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas — inequality and wealth concentration have only sharpened.

🧾 GST + Skill India — GST is still a compliance headache years in. CAG audits found PMKVY riddled with ghost beneficiaries and unused funds.

💰 $5 trillion economy by 2024 — quietly pushed out, no accounting of the miss.

🏙️ 100 Smart Cities — most are years behind, execution uneven outside metros.

📰 "Vishwaguru" & press freedom — India's press freedom rankings have been sliding, not climbing.

To be fair, defenders of these programs point to real counterpoints: monthly GST collections have grown substantially since rollout, UPI has made India a global leader in digital payments, highway and airport infrastructure has visibly expanded, and targets like the bullet train or $5T economy are arguably delayed rather than abandoned. The debate isn't whether nothing happened — it's whether the scale of delivery matches the scale of the promise.

None of this is secret. It's all documented — CAG reports, RBI data, government's own clarifications. But between rent, fuel prices, exam prep, EMIs and just getting through the week, most people don't have the bandwidth to track fifteen broken promises across a decade. That exhaustion isn't accidental — it's the actual mechanism. A tired electorate doesn't fact-check; it just reacts to the next headline.

And the opposition? Chronically fragmented, chronically outmessaged, permanently cast as the villain in a story it never gets to narrate. So the questions don't get asked in Parliament, they get asked in comment sections — and then scrolled past.

The scorecard exists. The willingness to actually read it is what's missing.
