The UAE announced plans to invest €40 billion (approximately $46 billion) in Germany during President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's state visit to Berlin on September 10, targeting sectors including artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, advanced technology, industry and energy. The announcement came during meetings with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, with €10 billion of the total allocated specifically to projects in the German state of Bavaria. The investment package includes plans for approximately 1 gigawatt of new data center capacity, according to statements from both governments. The pledge builds on €34 billion the UAE has already invested in Germany's chemicals and renewable energy sectors. German and Emirati companies signed 29 additional agreements worth €9.4 billion during the visit. The UAE is Germany's largest trading partner in the Gulf, with bilateral trade exceeding $15 billion annually. Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, stated that the investment reflects the UAE's ambition to build enduring partnerships with Germany's industrial, technological and research capabilities. The two countries also agreed to establish a German-UAE investment council to encourage further investment. The visit marks the first state visit to Germany by a UAE president, according to multiple official sources including the joint declaration issued during the visit. President Sheikh Mohamed had previously visited Germany in June 2019 when he was Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. The visit comes as the region faces continued disruption from the US-Iran war. More than 2,000 German companies maintain a regional presence or headquarters in the UAE, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp and Deutsche Bahn.
