UAE-Led Operation Green Shield 2026 Nets 839 Arrests and 280 Million Dollars in Amazon Environmental Crime Seizures Over 17 Days

A UAE-led international operation targeting environmental crime in the Amazon Basin resulted in 839 arrests and the seizure of assets worth more than 280 million dollars over 17 days in July 2026, marking one of the largest coordinated law enforcement campaigns ever conducted in the region, announced on August 4 by UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Lieutenant General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Operation Green Shield 2026 involved collaboration with Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil, deploying over 3,600 law enforcement personnel across 1,045 field operations coordinated from a multinational command center in Bogotá. The confiscated material included illegally harvested timber, mining equipment, fuel, minerals, and trafficked wildlife linked to illegal mining, logging, land grabbing, and related crimes threatening biodiversity and regional stability. The operation stems from the UAE's International Initiative of Law Enforcement for Climate, launched in partnership with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime at the Cop28 summit in Dubai in 2023. Sheikh Saif said the results reflect the UAE leadership's vision of making international cooperation a cornerstone of tackling cross-border environmental and climate-related security risks, building on the global platform established to strengthen the role of law enforcement in addressing environmental crime. The scale of the operation, which seized an estimated 280,000 cubic meters of illegally harvested timber according to some reports, represents a significant expansion beyond a similar 2025 effort that involved 1,500 officers from four countries, demonstrating the UAE's ability to translate diplomatic climate commitments into operational law enforcement outcomes across continents.
