UAE Nuclear Regulator Wins IAEA Innovation Award for AI-Powered Climate Risk Monitoring at Barakah Plant, Presented at 70th General Conference in Vienna

The UAE's Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation won the 2026 Innovation Award in the Artificial Intelligence category from the International Network on Innovation to Support Operating Nuclear Power Plants, established by the International Atomic Energy Agency, according to an announcement on September 17. The award, presented during the 70th IAEA General Conference in Vienna, recognizes FANR's Intelligent Operational Nuclear Safety system for its innovative application of artificial intelligence to strengthen the safety oversight and resilience of nuclear facilities, including the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant. The IONS system uses AI to monitor climate-related risks and operational conditions in real time, enhancing the regulator's ability to predict and respond to safety challenges at the UAE's only nuclear power facility. Barakah, located in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi, operates four reactors that collectively supply a significant portion of the UAE's electricity demand. The IAEA recognition underscores the UAE's push to integrate advanced technology into critical infrastructure oversight, aligning with broader national strategies on AI adoption, climate resilience, and energy security. The award positions FANR as a regional leader in nuclear safety innovation and adds to the UAE's growing international profile in advanced regulatory frameworks.
