Ajman Launches Pilot to Regulate Bachelor Accommodation in Five Areas, First Step Toward Emirate-Wide Framework
Record added
Ajman Municipality and Planning Department launched a pilot phase on September 30, 2026, to classify and regulate bachelor and shared accommodation in residential buildings across five areas: Al Nuaimiya, Al Rashidiya, Al Nakheel, Liwara and Al Rumaila, according to The National and Gulf News. The initiative aims to regulate residential occupancy patterns, improve efficient building use, and enhance urban planning and quality of life in the emirate, the department said. The pilot will be evaluated before expanding or further developing the initiative emirate-wide. The announcement came during a workshop organized by the department for property companies operating in Ajman on September 29, providing a platform for direct engagement with stakeholders.
Mohammed Abdulwahab Mustafa, director of the Municipal Control and Inspection Department, said the initiative is intended to address challenges associated with bachelor and shared accommodation by establishing clear frameworks governing residential occupancy, The National reported. The regulation follows similar efforts in Dubai, where shared housing rules came into effect to tackle dangerous accommodation conditions. Bachelor accommodation has long been a point of friction in UAE residential areas, with families complaining about overcrowding and safety risks while labor advocates point to insufficient affordable housing for single workers. Ajman's pilot approach suggests the emirate is moving cautiously, likely aware that enforcement without adequate alternative housing supply could displace workers without solving underlying accommodation shortages.
