Asian Port Congestion Continues to Absorb 8.5 Percent of Global Container Fleet, Recovery May Take Seven to Ten Months

Record added

Congestion at major Asian container ports is tying up about 8.5 percent of the global containership fleet, equivalent to roughly three million twenty-foot equivalent units of shipping capacity, maritime analysts said on October 4, 2026, according to The Manila Times citing Sea-Intelligence data. Sam Chambers of Asia Shipping Media told the publication that disruptions increasingly appear to be more than a temporary problem as weather disturbances and operational bottlenecks continue to delay vessels and disrupt cargo flows across Asia.

Sea-Intelligence estimates it could take seven to 10 months for congestion to return to the relatively low levels recorded in June 2025, based on recovery patterns following the Covid-19 pandemic and the initial Red Sea shipping crisis, according to the report. Freightos warned carriers skipping heavily affected ports could shift pressure to other ports across the regional network, spreading congestion rather than eliminating it. Drewry's Intra-Asia Container Index has reached record levels, with rates on several major routes hitting historic highs.

The sustained congestion removes a volume of capacity larger than the fleets of all but four global container shipping lines from service, raising the prospect of a prolonged shipping capacity crunch and higher freight rates that could extend into 2027. Uncertainty remains over whether carriers' strategy of skipping heavily affected ports will alleviate or redistribute bottlenecks across the regional network.
