Baltic Dry Index falls to three-month low at 2,511 points on weak China demand and vessel oversupply

Record added

The Baltic Dry Index dropped to 2,511 points on October 16, down 34 points or 1.34 percent, marking its tenth consecutive daily decline and the lowest level since June 30, according to the Baltic Exchange. The Capesize Index, tracking rates for vessels carrying 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, fell to 3,322 points on October 15, down 8.48 percent, its lowest since early April. Average daily earnings for Capesize vessels declined to $26,625, down $2,792 from the prior session. The Panamax Index, which covers 60,000-70,000 ton grain and coal carriers, dropped 2.2 percent to 2,356 points. Hellenic Shipping News attributed the decline to weak iron ore demand and subdued sentiment in China's steel market, combined with ample vessel availability adding downward pressure. Iron ore prices fell for a third straight session on October 15 to their lowest level in more than two years, weighed by persistent concerns over weak demand in top consumer China and prospects of growing supply, according to Reuters cited by Baird Maritime.

Shipowners operating Capesize and Panamax vessels face margin compression, particularly those with fixed operating costs and floating-rate charter arrangements. Lower freight costs partially offset costs for commodity producers and steel mills, but weak Chinese demand suggests industrial activity in the world's largest manufacturing economy remains under pressure. The North Atlantic Capesize market remained subdued, with weaker transatlantic and backhaul fixtures, while Fronthaul route activity remained limited, according to The Edge Malaysia's October 16 Baltic Exchange roundup.
