Tanker Lipsi Struck by Projectile in Strait of Hormuz on October 4, Engine Room Hit and Vessel Adrift

Record added

The Liberian-flagged tanker Lipsi, a six-week-old Aframax/LR2 of about 115,000 deadweight tonnes managed by Greece's Dynacom Tankers Management, was struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on October 4, 2026, hitting its engine room and leaving it disabled and adrift, according to Cyprus Mail and multiple outlets citing UK Maritime Trade Operations. The vessel was northeast of Oman's Jazirat Umm al-Fayarin when struck, with no casualties reported, Al Jazeera reported. UKMTO confirmed the incident but did not identify the attacker. The attack on Lipsi was one of at least nine incidents UKMTO has reported in the Hormuz waterway so far in October, already half the number recorded across Hormuz and the Persian Gulf combined in September, Bloomberg reported.

A separate incident on October 5 saw IRGC forces hail a vessel north of Khasab, Oman, warning it would be targeted if it failed to turn back, according to UKMTO; the vessel's master confirmed the crew complied and altered course. India's Ministry of External Affairs confirmed on October 6 that eleven of seventeen Indian nationals aboard a commercial vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz were injured after a projectile struck the vessel, Tribune India reported, though it was unclear if this was the same incident or a separate attack.

Commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz face exposure to projectile strikes that can disable propulsion and leave crews stranded, with war-risk insurance costs spiking and multiple shippers suspending or curtailing transits. UKMTO has not identified attackers or their intent.
