Dubai Launches Colour-Coded Addressing System Across 186 Areas With 2,000 Signs in First Phase Starting October
Record added
Dubai unveiled a redesigned addressing system on October 7, 2026, introducing colour-coded street signs and house number plates across 186 areas by 2030, the Supreme Committee for Urban Planning announced in coordination with the Roads and Transport Authority and Dubai Municipality, according to Gulf Business, The Arabian Post, Construction Week Online, and the Dubai Media Office. More than 2,000 signs will be installed or replaced during the fourth quarter of 2026 in the first phase covering five areas: Zaabeel 1, Zaabeel 2, Nad Al Sheba, Al Khawaneej 1, and Nazwa.
The new system assigns five colours representing geographic characteristics. Blue identifies locations near the sea, while gold marks desert landscapes. House number plates will display individual Makani numbers alongside QR codes linking physical addresses with digital location information. All signs, area markers and property identification plates follow the colour schemes of their respective neighbourhoods. The system was developed with support from a specialist wayfinding and addressing design consultant.
The phased rollout aims to improve navigation for residents, visitors, emergency services and delivery providers as Dubai's urban footprint expands. Priority areas were selected based on urban growth, population density, vibrancy and centrality, presence of residential and tourist attractions, and the share of streets not yet formally addressed. The initiative supports broader efforts to modernise UAE urban infrastructure and enhance service delivery, with direct implications for emergency response times, logistics efficiency, and property identification accuracy across the emirate.
