Asian Port Congestion Absorbing 8.5 Percent of Global Fleet Could Persist Into 2027, Sea-Intelligence Warns
Record added
Congestion at major Asian container ports is tying up about 8.5 percent of the global containership fleet, equivalent to roughly three million twenty-foot equivalent units of shipping capacity, according to Sea-Intelligence data cited by the Philippine Star on October 13 and the Manila Times on October 4. Sam Chambers, maritime analyst and editorial director of Asia Shipping Media, said on October 13 that the problem increasingly looks less like a temporary disruption and more like one that could persist well into 2027, the Philippine Star reported. Sea-Intelligence estimates that it could take seven to 10 months for congestion to return to the relatively low levels recorded in June 2025, based on recovery patterns following the Covid-19 pandemic and the initial Red Sea shipping crisis, with a return to conditions prevailing at the end of 2025 taking six to eight months, the Manila Times reported. Repeated typhoons have been a major factor, with congestion at Far East origin ports worsening as delays cascade into transshipment hubs, the Philippine Star reported.
Global container schedule reliability fell to 49.9 percent in August, according to Sea-Intelligence analysis reported by Tradlinx on October 7. Drewry's Intra-Asia Container Index has reached record territory, with individual routes hitting historic highs, the Philippine Star reported.
The prolonged recovery could mean Asian ports will still be dealing with congestion during the next peak cargo season and possibly into the period leading to Chinese New Year on February 6, 2027, the Manila Times reported, removing capacity from service and driving freight rates higher.
