Pakistan extends Indian aircraft airspace ban until November 24 as relations remain strained
Record added
Pakistan extended its airspace ban on Indian-registered aircraft and planes owned, operated or leased by Indian airlines for another month until November 24, 2026, according to the Pakistan Airports Authority announcement on October 18. The restriction, which applies to both the Karachi and Lahore flight information regions and also covers military flights, was initially imposed on April 23, 2025, and has been extended periodically since then amid strained relations between the two countries. India and Pakistan imposed reciprocal airspace restrictions on each other's aircraft following the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir.
The continued airspace closure reflects the frozen state of India-Pakistan relations more than a year after the Pahalgam attack, with no signs of diplomatic thaw despite the operational and economic costs of restricted flight paths. The ban forces Indian carriers to take longer routes around Pakistani airspace, increasing fuel costs and flight times for routes to the Middle East, Central Asia and Europe. The reciprocal nature of the restrictions means Pakistani airlines face similar operational constraints, demonstrating how security tensions continue to override commercial aviation interests.
