US consumer prices rise 3.7 percent in September, fastest monthly gain since April
Record added
US consumer prices accelerated to 3.7 percent year-over-year in September 2026, up from 3.4 percent in August, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data released October 14. The Consumer Price Index rose 0.6 percent month-over-month, the largest gain in five months, exceeding the 3.6 percent forecast. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, increased 0.3 percent monthly, above the expected 0.2 percent. Gasoline prices jumped 9.1 percent in September, accounting for over half of the monthly increase. Shelter costs rose 0.4 percent from the previous month, with year-over-year shelter inflation accelerating to 3.2 percent from 3.0 percent. Food costs remained unchanged overall.
The hotter-than-expected inflation reading strengthens the case for the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates at its October 27-28 meeting. Average gasoline prices reached 4.33 dollars per gallon as of mid-October, while diesel prices hit 6.29 dollars per gallon, according to the American Automobile Association. The inflation surge comes three weeks before the November 3 midterm elections and reinforces voter concerns about the cost of living. Rising energy costs driven by the Iran war and supply-related pressures have slowed progress toward the Fed's 2 percent inflation target. US Bank economists now expect the Fed to continue gradually tightening policy through early 2027, bringing the cumulative increase in the federal funds rate to 75 basis points between October 2026 and March 2027, with a peak range of 4.25 to 4.50 percent.
