US-Mexico trade negotiations stall as USMCA review talks falter over tariff disputes

Record added

Trade negotiations between the United States and Mexico have reached an impasse after months of talks about a deal to reduce duties on critical imports, according to a Wall Street Journal report published October 16, 2026. Progress toward an interim deal began to lose momentum in recent days due to friction stemming from 25 percent US tariffs on cars and 50 percent duties on metals, which the Commerce Department administers in the service of national security. Sources said Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has been resistant to reducing the tariffs. President Trump said on October 10 at a campaign rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, that Washington will make a new trade deal with Mexico and does not need Canada, though he provided no details on timing or whether the agreement would replace the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

The stalled negotiations come as the USMCA faces yearly reviews, with all three countries required to conduct a formal joint review starting in 2026. Trump's remarks suggest the rules for North America's biggest trade flows could be rewritten country by country rather than trilaterally. EY-Parthenon Americas supply chain leader Sameer Anand said North America itself has become a risk variable. Mexican outlet Latinus and SDP Noticias reported Trump called the coming agreement with Mexico great but gave no specifics on what it would cover. Most of his remarks were aimed at Canada, repeating that the United States loses money trading with its northern neighbor. Prediction markets on Polymarket gave a formal USMCA extension in 2026 a 9.5 percent chance as of October 11.
