India wholesale inflation accelerates to 11.39 percent in September as fuel and food prices surge
Record added
India's wholesale price inflation accelerated to 11.39 percent year-over-year in September 2026 from 9.92 percent in August, surpassing market expectations of 10.18 percent, according to official data released October 14. Fuel inflation jumped to 25.85 percent from 22.93 percent in August, driven primarily by mineral oil prices rising 40.02 percent, while manufacturing inflation also accelerated to 9.76 percent from 8.37 percent, led by chemicals and chemical products, textiles, rubber and plastics, and basic metals. India Ratings forecast wholesale inflation could exceed 12 percent in October due to adverse base effects, weather conditions and energy price shocks, with the agency warning that WPI inflation is expected to remain in double digits at least until February 2027.
The sharp acceleration in wholesale inflation compounds pressure on India's monetary policy and household budgets, with retail inflation already at a 21-month high. The adverse base effect where inflation was much lower in the same period last year combined with elevated global crude oil prices above 100 dollars per barrel and weak currency are acting as catalysts for higher inflation. Economists warn that inflation is becoming more generalized across categories, with the Reserve Bank potentially raising policy rates by 50 to 75 basis points in the current tightening cycle.
