Norte Fire burns 570 acres in Orange County as Santa Ana winds drive evacuations

The Norte Fire ignited around 11:30 am on October 16, 2026, near Portico Del Norte and Eminencia Del Norte on the northern edge of San Clemente, California, and rapidly spread to 570 acres by evening, driven by relentless Santa Ana winds. The fire crossed into San Juan Capistrano, burning 250 acres within the first hour. As of October 17 evening, the Orange County Fire Authority reported the blaze 25 percent contained, with all evacuation orders lifted by Saturday night at 6:00 pm. Seven homes were confirmed damaged or destroyed, and two firefighters were hospitalized with heat-related injuries. At peak, approximately 4,600 homes and nearly 16,000 people were in the evacuation zone. The Capistrano Unified School District dismissed students early at ten schools, and the state received a Fire Management Assistance Grant from FEMA.

Orange County Fire Chief T.J. McGovern said the fire moved fast due to weather and topography, calling the Santa Ana winds relentless. The cause remains under investigation. The Norte Fire is among several blazes that ignited since October 15 amid fierce Santa Ana winds and unseasonably high temperatures affecting Southern California. Representative Mike Levin, whose family evacuated their San Juan Capistrano home, said year-round wildfire season has become the new normal for the region. California entered 2026 with mountains holding only 18 percent of average snowpack, raising concerns for an active fire season.
