Ukraine accuses SpaceX of restricting Starshield military service without warning as tensions with Trump escalate
Record added
Ukrainian officials said on October 14, 2026, that SpaceX imposed speed restrictions on Starshield, the military-grade version of Starlink, without advance notice, disrupting drone operations and intelligence gathering. Serhiy Beskrestnov, an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said terminals began cutting out when drones exceeded 160 kilometers per hour, with some disconnecting above 80 kph. The restrictions came hours after Ukraine did not receive an early warning about a Russian ballistic missile attack, part of what Zelenskyy called one of the largest attacks with 269 drones launched. President Trump denied on October 16 that the White House ordered the restrictions, saying it was not him and he did not think it was Elon Musk. However, Musk stated on X that Starshield systems are owned and controlled by the US government and any limits are decided by the US military and ultimately the president.
The Starlink disruption occurred amid escalating tensions between Washington and Kyiv following Trump's October 9 diesel deal with Russia, which Zelenskyy condemned as a gift to Putin. Zelenskyy said on October 17 that the Starshield speed limitations appear deliberate and not the result of technical problems, calling it a planned operation. The development raises concerns that access to critical American satellite communications could become leverage over Ukraine alongside reported US threats to curtail intelligence cooperation unless Kyiv halts strikes on Russian oil refineries. Service was partially restored but Ukrainian forces continue to report connectivity issues affecting frontline operations. Two US officials told CNN the decision to limit Ukrainian access to Starshield was not a high-level policy decision, though the reasoning remains unclear.
